Cascade Refrigerated Cold Trap (E861B)
The unit is designed to trap condensable vapours (usually water) during transformer drying operations. Capable of pressures in the low
micron range and a plate temperature of -85ºF, the unit provides fast dry-out of “wet” transformers. The unit is self contained using air-cooled compressors mounted on a sturdy fabricated steel base plate. The unit consists of a cascade refrigeration system, a vacuum chamber and a control cabinet to house starters relays, switches and control transformer. Isolation valves are also furnished. A by-pass is provided to permit evacuations during the defrost cycle.

ENERDry Transformer Dry-Out System
Transformers and its paper insulation have a primary enemy – Water. Water can be removed from a transformer using a vacuum dehydration process. Now, however an easier and less expensive method can be used to remove the water from the transformer oil and its paper insulation. Transformers that have 5% moisture or higher can be dried to acceptable levels without taking the transformer out of service.

Insulating Oils Purification Fuller’s Earth Filter (E575A)
Electrical, Transformer Oil Purification SystemsInsulating Oils Purification Fuller’s Earth Filter (E575A)
Fuller’s Earth oil filters are used for removal of acids and soluble surface acting contaminants by adsorption.
Treatment with Fuller’s earth will increase the IFT (Interfacial Tension) of oil and reduce the PF (Power Factor) to desired levels. When water and some volatile acids are removed from oil through a prior vacuum process, adsorptive capacity of Fuller’s Earth for removal of remaining soluble contamination is greatly extended. Positive protection assures migration free, sparling clean effluent. All acids, gums, resins and other surface acting soluble contaminants are trapped and held within the media.

On-Line Tap Changer Oil Purifier (TFS-2)
ENERVAC developed the On-Line tap changer oil purifier filter (TFS-2) to reduce the carbon, water and metallic particles in tap changers. These contaminants are produced by arcing contacts during the transfer of loads from tap-to-tap in the tap changer compartment. By using this system, operation and maintenance costs are reduced and the system’s reliability is improved. Load tap changer problems can be effectively reduced with the use of ENERVAC’s on-line oil filtration system.

Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) Decontamination System
Electrical, Transformer Oil Purification SystemsPolychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) Decontamination System
The MPU series is designed for the decontamination of electrical insulating oils that have been contaminated with low levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs – also known as “Askarels”). PCBs were first synthesised in 1881 and have excellent properties for use in transformers; they are very stable, fire-resistant, insulating and have a low volatility. Unfortunately, because they are stable organic compounds that can remain indefinitely in the environment, they accumulate in the fatty tissue of most living organisms. The pollutants are so toxic that even one gram can contaminate up to one billion litres of water. Approximately 635,000,000 kg of Askarels were produced in North America before production was banned in 1977.
Oils containing up to 5,000 parts per million (PPM) of PCBs can be processed in the ENERVAC MPU, lowering the PCB level to below the detectable limit.
The chemical process employed in the MPU reverses the process by which PCBs were originally developed. A small amount of sodium dispersion is added to dehydrated and degassed insulating oil in a reaction vessel. The sodium reacts with the chlorine in the PCB and converts it to harmless compounds, common salt and a few hydrocarbon residues. These reaction byproducts are removed from the now PCB-free oil either by an optional centrifuge or in a settling tank. The sludge is non-PCB and can be disposed of in any industrial waste disposal facility.
The decontaminated oil can be reused once it has been through a further upgrade with an ENERVAC Fullers Earth system (E575A) and Vacuum Oil Purifier (E865A) or a Transformer Oil Regeneration system (E575R). This upgraded oil meets the ASTM and IEC standards of new oils.
The technology used in the MPU was developed by BC Hydro and Ontario Hydro in the early 1980’s, both of these utilities have been using the ENERVAC MPU for over 30 years and have reclaimed tens of millions of litres of contaminated oil.

Transformer Oil Purifier / Degasification (E865A)
ENERVAC’s (transformer oil purifier) high vacuum process is used for the dehydration and degasification of electrical insulating liquids including transformer oils, polybutene and silicone fluids, to increase and maintain their dielectric strength. The processing includes the removal of free and soluble water, dissolved air and gases and particulate matter. The most important applications of high vacuum (transformer oil purification) degasifiers (transformer oil purifiers) are in the field of extra high voltage transmission and in the manufacture of electrical apparatus.
In addition, the high vacuum process is used in the degasification of cable oils including polybutene. Outside of the electrical industry, this process is used for electronic and radar equipment, vacuum pump sealing oils, brake fluids and refrigeration oils – including phosphate esters and silicones. Mobile and stationary units are available in sizes 50 to 6000 GPH (190 to 23,000 l/h).

Transformer Oil Regeneration Plant (E575R)
ENERVAC’s Transformer Oil Regeneration Plant provides all the benefits of Fuller’s Earth treatment without the associated problems of contaminated clay disposal or the high cost of replacing saturated earth. At the end of the useful lifetime of the regeneration media, normally 300 times longer than Fuller’s Earth, it is simply disposed of in a normal landfill site. Ideally suited to large throughputs, the plant is available in either a mobile or stationary version.
